Many hospitals and clinics in the world today still keep patient records and medical histories on piles of paper and folders and lock them in a drawer or in boxes to be put away in storage rooms. It is a common filing system for most medical institutions to have patient records and laboratory files be kept in a specific order in order for them to gain easier access in case they would need to look into them. However, there have been issues with these paper-based files such as handwriting legibility that has resulted in a lot of medical errors in terms of prescription and diagnosis. In the past few years, the advent of fast-growing technology has affected the way these records are maintained. The paper-based records are now being replaced by the “electronic medical record system” & “electronic medical record software” for a more convenient and accurate data maintenance.
What exactly do “electronic medical record system” & “electronic medical record software” bring to the table? These systems and software basically provide electronic versions of a patient’s medical health history. Most of the bits of information found in these systems include a patient’s past heath problems, vital signs, received immunizations, radiology reports, progress in medications, patient demographics, and laboratory data. Aside from these, most of these systems and software are incorporated in hospital billing and practice management software in order to achieve a fully integrated work system. There is also a possibility of electronic prescriptions and patient reminders and information about a patient being shared electronically with other providers. These EMRs can also check a patient’s eligibility for insurance and submit his claims electronically. With the proper use of EMR systems and software, these can drastically change how health care is provided in the country. Computerized records, compared to paper-based ones, can further improve efficiency in hospital and clinical services, decrease the possibility of errors in recording data and can dramatically reduce the cost of health care services. These electronic records can also become a vast source of information in terms of data mining. Many of these systems are being offered by a lot of medical vendors who can customize specific features as requested by a hospital or a physician.
“Electronic medical record system” & “electronic medical record software” can either be web-based or an on-premise system. Whatever type of EMR software or system that a hospital or a physician chooses to utilize, the benefits of these digital records are the same. Aside from better documentation, data security is improved and there is a remarkably more accurate coding in a patient’s files. Furthermore, EMRs can provide shorter billing cycles and can improve a doctor’s decision making by referring to a more reliable and correct data. With these advantages, a hospital’s or a physician’s practice can be increased while improving patient care. Storage costs are no longer an issue as well since computers can store all patient data properly. EMRs can also standardize medical forms and data input which help in providing more accurate and improved healthcare services.
