Individual Rights & Health Care Reform Part 1 of 3 from a presentation given at the National Press Club in Washington DC on September 19,2009 by John David Lewis, Ph.D during a public briefing on the “Joint Defense of Freedom in American Medicine” sponsored by Americans for Free Choice in Medicine. The lecture focuses on a principled understanding of health care finance as it relates to the philosophical, moral and political concept of rights. Regardless of whether or not you agree with the conclusions reached in this presentation, without an understanding and consideration of the moral and philosophical issues involved, it is impossible to have an educated opinion about this subject. Discussions that simply involve a “feeling” about what is the “right” thing to do while ignoring an understanding of the issue at this level, will result in “solutions” that will not only fail, but will be morally wrong and harm all parties involved including the ones that are intended to be helped. This presentation provides an introduction on how to develop deeper philosophical understanding of the issue. If you find this approach compelling, please do the following: send the link to your contacts; go to www.JohnDavidLewis.com and www.AFCM.org and sign up as a supporter; view the entire briefing there when it is available; view more videos and written material; become actively involved with the debate.

[T]he government of the United States is a definite government, confined to specified objects. It is not like the state governments, whose powers are more general. Charity is no part of the legislative duty of the government. — James Madison

  2. iprazhm says:

It is not love to take from man what is his,? what he has earned by the sweat of his brow, and take by force to give to another. Charity must come from the heart and not forced out by tyranny. Only each man knows when the act of giving his livelihood has become too much a burden to bare, NOT the begger with his hand out or the authority with one hand open and a whip in the other.

  3. lucentenor says:

Brass, you should question the proper function of a government. And question your own view of the benefecence, or malevolence, of man. If you cared about man, if you realized that his proper relationships are mutually benevolent, you would want every single one of them free- with a government acting solely to prevent violation of rights, that is to take force out of civilian interaction. Such a free society promotes charity, increases quality of life, and benefits all.

NO! NO! NO! to this health care bill; it all sounds good when Obama gets on the air waves blowing smoke up people’s ASS! What he isn’t saying is under this new Health Care Plan the parents or parent with children has to keep there child on there health care plan until they reach the age 26! I’ve always been a Democrat and even voted for Obama, but I must agree with the rep on this one there is parts of this bill that really “stinks”, and the public is in for a very rude awaking should this pass.

  5. WarVideo says:

Same thing, why should I be FORCED to pay for teachers with my taxes, i dont have kids.

  6. BrassiXXL says:

And teachers? You’ll say whatever nonsense to make you outlandish statements seems appropriate.

  7. WarVideo says:

Yes, the only country who had it right was the USA. It was the contry who came the closest to a fully free capitalist economy.

You can’t compare the police to medicine, policing and protection of rights are a legitimate functions of the government.

  8. BrassiXXL says:

I’d like you to explain how the doctors and citizens rights are violated in a country with universal healthcare. Lets say France. Tell me all about it, please.

  9. BrassiXXL says:

You are out of your fuckin mind. Do tyou consider police depts, and libraries socialist programs too? Are the police being violated? You are so full of shit it scares me. And thats why the US sucks so much cause so many ppl are easily fooled by something that should be so painfully obvious. So ALL other countris are socialists. The only one who has it right is America…. ya right get a grip and stop closing your eyes to the obvious.

  10. WarVideo says:

The reason a person chooses to live in a society is because it benefits him, he gets more value out of it than he would living by himself. But if members of society start to violate rights and treat you like you’re a cog in a machine, then that whole evaluation of society has to be reconsiderd.

  11. WarVideo says:

They do it by violating the rights of their doctors and their citizens, you know like any socialist program does it.

  12. BrassiXXL says:

Complete nonsense. His arguments are easily countered by simple logic.

Anyway, there is no hope for America. Healthcare isnt gonna change anytime soon with easily manipulated morons like this fool. In a country where the all consuming behemoth known as the healthcare industry represents such a huge portion of the national economy, the powers that be will not let that change. Not anytime soon anyway. Its gonna take awhole lot of trying and a whole lot of ppl to stop believing nonsense.

  13. BrassiXXL says:

Another thing about this “service” nonsense. Are teachers not professionals? Or policemen, or firemen? What if your house was on fire and the firemen made you fill out payment info before they would rescue your children from the burning building. By using his silly one sided lgic about how doctors are professionals who offer a service, well so do all those ppl too. Perhaps all social services should be privatized and the government shouldnt fund schools, police/fire services, libraries, museums.

  14. BrassiXXL says:

I wonder if this gentleman would change his tune if he wasnt obviously financially well off. Like if he was an engineer in the auto industry that got laid off and couldnt find work due to the terrible state of the economy. And then, god forbid his 12 yr old child became ill with cancer and he wasnt able to jafford the health insurance and his life is basically a write-off. I bet he would have quite a different point of view on healthcare being a service and a priveledge.

  15. BrassiXXL says:

Doctors are professionals that work their whole lives to perfect their trade. They dont owe it to ppl to help them. Is this guy retarded? Does he have it in his head that with universal healthcare doctors are expected to not be compensated for their services? To travel around helping ppl they meet like they are Jesus? This isnt communist China doctor!! I dont even know why he made this ludricrous statement. As tho ppl expect doctors to work for free, which in fact, many of them do. Imagine that.

  16. BrassiXXL says:

Finally, his statement of how healthcare is a priveledge, not a right is nonsense. He calls it a service and tries to imply that doctors are like contractors or something. We are talking about ppls lives here you fool!! Not having new oak cabinets installed in your kitchen. It seems that doctors in the rest of the world become doctors so they can help ppl and use their intellect and dedication to save lives. Apparently in the US ppl become doctors solely for the financial benefit.

  17. BrassiXXL says:

As well, his metaphore of a desert island is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. We arent on a desert island. This isnt Lord of the Flies you moron. We live in a society, we help each other and work together. We arent savage animals. If he feels hes just here for himself, and not part of the big machine that is the US, than why the fuck is he even a citizen? Whats the point? I’d like to see him go live on a deserted island in the South Pacific and see how he does without the help of society.

  18. BrassiXXL says:

I havent watched the other 2 vids yet but so far this mans arguments pompous and nonsensical at best. He talks about universal healthcare like its the most absurd and impossible thing ever. Well he lives in the ONLY industrialized country that doesnt have a universal health care system in the world. Now I’m not an economist, but tell me doctor, how do all the other countries (Australia, Britain and EU, Canada, France… to name a few) do it?

  19. BrassiXXL says:

lol, defeat… you ppl crack me up.

  20. rdanneskjold11 says:

He makes a good point, but there needs to be a broader one. Socialists typically don’t think that a doctor, in virtue of being a doctor, are morally obligated to help any given person. They typically argue that every citizen in society has a moral obligation to fund the health services, and so compensate the doctor for his effort.

  21. legendre007 says:

Excellent points, Dr. Lewis! Conservatives need to realize that socialized medicine is the “brother’s keeper” doctrine being consistently applied, and that socialized medicine cannot be fully defeated until people realize that they are not their brothers’ keepers.
